Fitzwilliam realized Lizzy was missing a short time after he’d started eating dessert. Immediately, he understood she must’ve gone to search the stables for the missing pocket watch. With a regretful sigh, he pushed aside the lemon sorbet, which was a rare treat, and stood up. No one seemed to notice, since they were all engaged in conversation, so there was no one from whom to take his leave or pardon his absence.

He strode from the dining room and out the front door a short time later, moving around the house to the stables. There was a sense of urgency in his steps, and though he couldn’t explain it, he suddenly started to run. Every instinct in his body was screaming at him to get to Lizzy and now.

Darcy tended to be emotionless and analytical, to hide his feelings and ignore such unscientific things as intuition, but he found it impossible to do so right then. Instead, he started running even faster, arriving at the stables moments later.

He entered, at first seeing nothing out of place, but then he heard voices coming from the end of the building. They sounded angry, and when Lizzy yelped, he rushed forward without fear or thought for himself. He was responding to the anxiety in her tone, and he thundered into the tack room seconds later.

The sight before him enraged him. Wickham was pressing Lizzy against the wall, and his hand was moving down her body in a manner that turned his stomach. It was too much like the way he had found Wickham and Georgiana that fateful day when he had stopped at Ramsgate for an impromptu visit and discovered the two of them alone at the cliffs, with his sister pressed against the rockface while George Wickham kissed her in a scandalous fashion. At least Georgiana had been a willing participant, but Lizzy appeared not the least bit compliant as she struggled against him.

Darcy didn’t have to think. He simply acted by rushing forward, grasping Wickham by the shoulder and spinning him to face him. Before Wickham even had a chance to recognize him, Fitzwilliam brought back his fist and punched him in the face. Wickham went down with a groan, not moving, and Darcy had to force his gaze away from the fallen man to keep from hitting him again and again. Instead, he focused his attention on Lizzy. “Are you all right, Lizzy?”

If she cared about the lapse in formality at using the nickname her sister called her, she said nothing. She nodded, looking shaken. “I am well.”

“What he was trying to do is most disgraceful. Perhaps you should have a doctor examine you?” His cheeks flushed with heat when he asked, “Did he manage to…interfere with you?”

Her eyes widened, and she shook her head. “Oh, no. It was not about that. He was trying to retrieve this.” She reached into her and pulled out a gold pocket watch. “I think he planned to dispose of it. He said it was my word against his, and I fear he might have chosen to dispose of me as well.
